‘ARCHITECTONISCH en KERAMISCH vakmanschap’
Hans Oudendorp (Kampen 1955) is inmiddels een veelzijdig keramist, beeldende kunstenaar en vormgever met atelier/studio in Amsterdam. Van origine volgde hij een opleiding interior design aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, architectuur aan Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam, waar hij afstudeerde als architect BNA, gevolgd door een eigen architectenbureau in Amsterdam dat hij ca. 20 jaar runde. Hans Oudendorp: ‘Architectuur en interieur is het realiseren en creëren van de persoonlijke ruimte, waarbij ikzelf maximaal zon- en daglicht als belangrijkste randvoorwaarde stelde, en dat geldt in zekere zin ook voor mijn keramische objecten: de maximale lichtreflectie van vorm en textuur.’
De laatste jaren kreeg zijn voorliefde voor autonome kunst meer en meer aandacht – een persoonlijk kwaliteit die nu eindelijk mocht groeien, daarom volgde hij parallel aan zijn architectenbureau de avond-opleiding tekenen en schilderen aan de Wackers Academie Amsterdam. Hier (her)ontdekte hij zijn liefde voor beeldbouwen en boetseren; het ruimtelijk werken naar model maakte veel in hem los en hij volgde extra lessen bij de beeldhouwers Bart Holt, Eddy Roos, Sanne van Tongeren (Academy of Art in Florence) en beeldhouwer Natasja Bennink.
Met het werken in ruwe natuurklei vond hij uiteindelijk zijn nieuwe creatieve wending richting keramiek. In 2024 rondde hij de Nederlandse Keramiekopleiding Gouda af, de meest ambachtelijke en officieel erkende keramiekopleiding van Nederland, en vanaf dat moment experimenteert hij met het zoeken naar een architectonische/autonome vormentaal met klei, een zoektocht met dit materiaal naar een persoonlijk ambachtelijk handschrift. Hans Oudendorp: ‘Ik laat mij inspireren door verschillende klei-soorten uit Nederland maar ook op reis in Europa ga ik altijd op zoek naar bijzondere klei-gronden – verbazend om te zien dat er zoveel verschillende texturen, kleuren en structuren te vinden zijn die in mijn atelier het startpunt worden voor nieuwe vormen en natuurlijke glazuren. Ik ben er inmiddels achter dat klei, in al zijn natuurlijkheid, geeft en neemt, in feite geef je vorm aan objecten met een zekere ruimtelijke dictie – als keramist laat ik het materiaal spreken, laat het zichzelf zijn ‘eigenheid’ vinden en uitdrukken’. Dat resulteerde in een collectie ‘grootse’ bijna ‘architectonische’ schalen, borden en vazen in de tinten matzwart, offwhite, betongrijs en verschillende objecten voorzien van een bijzonder brons-glazuur – met uiteindelijk resultaat dat hij in 2024 gecureerd werd door styliste/curator Rianne Landstra voor haar ArtWorks selectie tijdens de Knock Knock Art Fair Amsterdam en had hij tevens zijn eerste presentatie tijdens de Atelierroute IJburg.

‘ARCHITECTURAL and CERAMIC craftsmanship’
Hans Oudendorp (Kampen 1955) is a versatile ceramist, visual artist and designer with an atelier/studio in Amsterdam. He originally studied interior design at the ‘Gerrit Rietveld’ Academie, later graduated as architect at ‘Academie voor Bouwkunst’ Amsterdam, being followed with an architectural office in Amsterdam which he owned for about 20 years. Hans Oudendorp: ‘Architecture and interior design is all about realizing and creating a personal space, in which I myself set maximum sunlight and daylight as the most important prerequisite, and in a certain sense that also applies to my ceramic objects; the maximum light reflection of shape and texture.’
In recent years, his preference for autonomous art increasingly attracted his attention – a personal quality that finally was allowed to grow, which is why he did follow the evening course in drawing and painting at the ‘Wackers Academie’ Amsterdam in parallel with his own architectural office. While studying he (re)discovered his love for sculpture and sculpting; working spatially from a model released a lot in him and he took extra lessons from artists Bart Holt, Eddy Roos, Sanne van Tongeren (Academy of Art/Florence) and sculptor Natasja Bennink.
Working in raw natural clay, he eventually found his new creative direction towards ceramics. In 2024 he completed the ‘Nederlandse Keramiek Opleiding’ in Gouda, the only artisanal and officially recognized ceramic study in the Netherlands, and from that moment on he experiments with clay for a more architectural/autonomous formal language, a search for a personal artisanal creative signature. Hans Oudendorp: 'I get my inspiration from different types of clay from the Netherlands, but also when traveling in Europe, I always look for special clay grounds - it is amazing to see that there are so many different textures, colours and structures that become the starting point for new shapes and natural glazes. I have discovered that clay, in all its naturalness, gives and takes, in a way you shape objects with a certain spatial diction – as a ceramist I let the material speak, let it find and express its own ‘uniqueness’. This resulted in a collection of ‘grand’ almost ‘architectural’ bowls, plates and vases in various shades of matt black, off-white, concrete grey and beautiful objects executed in a special bronze glaze – with the ultimate result that in 2024 he was curated by stylist/ curator Rianne Landstra for her ArtWorks selection for the Knock Knock Art Fair Amsterdam and he also had his first ceramics presentation during the ‘Atelierroute IJburg’.
